Under the Sun
Black and Brown artists celebrate the words of Octavia Butler
Genie Botanica presents Under the Sun at 621 Gallery, a group exhibition of Black and Brown artists whose diverse voices highlight ancestral spirituality, indigenous heritage, environmental restoration, natural healing practices and the preservation of craft. In this show, craft is approached as a form of technology and historical documentation that carries us forward. It represents an initiative to promote sustainable living and the reclamation of cultural traditions.
Octavia Butler, Black science fiction novelist and visionary in the literary arts once said, “There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.” Her words have evoked the minds and hearts of our modern generation who seek deeper meaning in the layers of a banal world.
The mission of Genie Botanica, an ancestral craft studio based in Florida, is to encourage holistic connection with the natural world through collaborative projects and environmental art education rooted in ancient knowledge systems. Butler’s artistry in script provides the wisdom we need to build a sustainable future.
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 5th at 6pm to enjoy artistry, music and great conversation. The exhibition will be on view until June 26th, when our Artist Talk will occur at 7pm with a panel discussion to share more about the artists and their creative practices. I will be available throughout the month of June to provide guided tours.
